What is botox?

Botox injections are used to treat a variety of medical conditions. Botox is a neurotoxin made from the microbes that cause botulism (a kind of food poisoning). But don’t worry, it’s very safe if used appropriately by a medical professional.

Botox got its start as a cosmetic treatment. It smooths facial wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. Doctors also use Botox to treat neuromuscular conditions such as migraines, muscle spasms, and hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. It refers to any abnormal sweating, such as sweating when it’s not hot. People who sweat excessively often soak through their clothing or drip sweat. Regular antiperspirants don’t work well for those with this condition.

Botox injections are a new treatment option for people with hyperhidrosis. You may be a candidate for Botox if your sweating fails to improve with prescription antiperspirants. Botox has been FDA-approved for people who sweat excessively from their armpits. It may also be used “off-label” to reduce sweating in other areas, such as the hands, feet, and face.

Off-label use refers to using a medication for something other than what it was approved to treat. In this case, it means that Botox hasn’t gone through the same amount of rigorous testing to confirm its effectiveness for treating excessive sweating in other areas of the body.

UNDERARM BOTOX. PROS AND CONS

Underarm botox is one of the common procedures performed by most plastic surgeons and aesthetic practitioners: excessive sweating, also known as Hyperhidrosis, causes a lot of inconvenience in everyday life, whether you are a housewife or a business person. Many of us keep quiet about this problem, thinking it is an embarrassing matter to discuss. Needless to say that many people, apart from using a regular deodorant, take no other measures to get rid of hyperhidrosis. Underarm botox in this case can be a real life saver for all those who are tired of fighting with excessive sweating.

But before we discuss pros and cons of underarm botox, it’s important to understand what exactly hyperhidrosis is and what are its causes.

WHAT IS HYPERHIDROSIS?

Sweating is a normal and natural process for every human. Sweating performs the most important function of protecting our body from overheating while we are doing sports, drinking hot drinks, spending time on the beach, sitting in a stuffy room or having emotional outbursts. So, when exactly does sweating become a problem? Whenever the fluid excreted by the sweat glands becomes excessive, frequent and starts causing constant discomfort which significantly reduces the quality of life. To make it short, Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating.

Classifying types of hyperhidrosis by the affected areas, there are two types of it:

  • Generalized hyperhidrosis which means it effects the whole body;
  • and Localized which means it effects certain parts of the body such as palms of hands or soles of feet.

Now, classifying hyperhidrosis by its causes, this condition should be divided into:

  • Primary hyperhidrosis which is not associated with a disease;
  • and Secondary hyperhidrosis which is caused by serious health problems.

Interestingly, in most cases primary hyperhidrosis is localized and has no apparent cause. Secondary hyperhidrosis is always generalized and represents a good reason to see a doctor.

In this article I will cover treatment of primary hyperhidrosis which is not associated with a disease.

Primary hyperhidrosis is a fairly common problem among people of different age. Although it is not a critical illness that requires a serious medical intervention, it still needs to be eliminated: unfortunately, its causes are not clear, and this greatly complicates the lives of people suffering from it.

Primary hyperhidrosis keeps a person in a state of constant physical and mental discomfort. The sweat glands are located all over the surface of the body, but the maximum number of them is found in the armpits, the skin of the face, the palms, the feet, the groin area, and under the breasts in women. Can you imagine how a person suffering from hyperhidrosis feels, given the rather big coverage area of sweat glands?! Such people find it difficult to communicate because the smell of the sweat or wet handshake puts off their interlocutors. They have problems travelling by public transport: after every trip they must change the clothes because any increase in air temperature or humidity causes inadequate reaction of the sweat glands and in a matter of seconds, they find themselves wet from head to toe. As for their love life, it’s best not to go into it.

This kind of problems cause a serious social drama: people suffering from hyperhidrosis become isolated, angry, irritable, which puts off the others even more! In addition to psychological problems, primary hyperhidrosis can provoke some serious diseases: excessive perspiration disrupts the pH balance, which inevitably affects the skin causing acne, furunculosis, moist eczema, dermatitis and many other issues. Add to this lot constant dehydration, which is detrimental to the work of the whole body, and especially to the functioning of the central nervous system.
